Dr. Katrina Hurley will serve as Acting Vice President, Medicine, Quality & Safety while the IWK completes its search for the permanent replacement.
Katrina has been an emergency physician at IWK Health since 2009. She led the Emergency Department from 2019 to 2024, guiding her team through the adoption of lean practices, the design of a new department, and the challenges of COVID-19. She holds the designation of Canadian Certified Physician Executive, is a Certified Professional Co-Active Coach, and serves as Assistant Dean, Faculty Wellness at Dalhousie University.
Katrina is deeply committed to addressing burnout and its impact on satisfaction, innovation, and growth. She brings a unique combination of clinical expertise, leadership skills, and insight into compassion and resilience. She cares about cultivating authenticity, fostering connection, and creating a culture of fulfillment.
Her leadership will provide continuity and stability during this transition period, and she has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to patient- and family-centred care, quality improvement, and supporting colleagues across the organization.
