IWK Centre for Clinical Bioinformatics (CCBio)

The IWK Centre for Clinical Bioinformatics (CCBio) serves as a facilitator and enabler of data-driven precision medicine at IWK Health, helping researchers and clinicians gain access to integrated data platforms while keeping in place the governance structures that protect the privacy, security, and ethical use of patient data.

Building on this foundation, CCBio works closely with the IWK Maritime Centre for Precision Medicine, aligning its efforts to support the data and informatics component of that broader initiative and to strengthen data connectivity across the IWK precision medicine program.

This same commitment extends across CCBio's other activities. On the funding side, CCBio brings people together, helps align resources, and supports members through the grant application process, a role that has already helped secure a $5.2 million Genome Canada grant for the GAPP Program and a $120,000 Canadian Cancer Society grant for data transformation. CCBio brings that same approach to the implementation of artificial intelligence tools within the guardrails set at the IWK, provincial, and national levels, and by contributing directly to the IWK data governance plans.

Beyond IWK, CCBio builds ties with Dalhousie University and a growing network of institutions across Canada working on data sharing and connectivity, partnering with Genome Atlantic, LifeBit AI, ResolveHD, and Illumina to explore new possibilities for patients across the region.
