Dr. Ken Farion’s appointment as Vice President of Medicine, Quality & Safety at IWK Health marks a significant new chapter in a distinguished career dedicated to improving healthcare delivery. With over 25 years of experience in both clinical practice and healthcare leadership, Farion’s journey reflects a commitment to innovation, patient care, and system-wide improvement. As he stepped into his new role in February 2026, his vision and leadership promise to further elevate IWK Health’s mission to provide exceptional care to patients and families across the region.

Before joining IWK Health, Farion held key leadership roles at CHEO in Ottawa, where he served as Vice President of Quality, Strategy & Family Partnership. In this capacity, he managed a broad portfolio that included quality improvement and safety, digital health, clinical engineering, and programs such as BORN Ontario and Newborn Screening Ontario. His work was instrumental in advancing these critical programs, and this experience continues to shape his approach to leadership today.

As he steps into this new role, Farion sees it as the culmination of his career.

"I anticipate this will be my final significant leadership role of my medical career," says Farion. "I’m really looking to leverage every bit of my experience, skill, and energy to have maximal impact."

He views his position at IWK Health as a "leader of leaders" role, one where he can influence and build leadership capacity across various domains. For Farion, this role offers an opportunity not only to lead but also to learn from the incredible team of professionals he’ll be working alongside.

When asked about the similarities and differences between his roles at CHEO and IWK Health, Dr. Farion highlighted how both institutions share a strong sense of mission.

"IWK and CHEO are very similar in so many ways," he explained. “Both are so much more than specialized hospitals due to their strong partnerships and broad regional and provincial mandates. Like CHEO, IWK also has incredible brand loyalty and community support, along with a robust focus on education, research, and innovation.”

This alignment with IWK’s values was one of the key factors that drew Farion to the organization.

One area that Farion is particularly excited to address is the role of data in healthcare transformation.

"I’m really excited to tackle data governance and how we leverage the many new sources of clinical and administrative data in new ways to improve the health system across the quintuple aim—quality, value, patient experience, provider experience, and health equity.”

Throughout his career, Farion has been a firm believer in the power of small, incremental improvements to drive larger change.

"Everything can be improved, one small improvement at a time," he said.

It’s this mindset that has allowed him to guide teams through complex challenges, helping them regain focus and unity during times of transformation.

As Farion settles into his new role at IWK Health, his extensive experience, strategic mindset, and passion for healthcare will undoubtedly contribute to the continued evolution of the organization. With a focus on collaboration, innovation, and improving care outcomes, his leadership is sure to make a lasting impact on IWK Health and the families it serves.
