The new IWK Children’s Emergency Department (ED) is bringing advanced diagnostic imaging closer to where it matters most—the point of care.
The ED, scheduled to open in 2027, will house a medical imaging section within the department featuring a computerized tomography (CT) suite and scanner as well as a dedicated general x-ray (XR) room.
“Having the equipment right there will improve access to imaging by reducing the need for patients to travel through the hospital to the Diagnostic Imaging Department,” says Carol Grace, X-Ray Lead, IWK Health. “It also enables more timely exams while helping to ease patient stress.”
With faster, more precise technology designed specifically for young patients, clinicians will be able to diagnose and treat conditions more quickly while reducing the need for stressful transfers throughout the hospital. The result will be a more efficient, child-friendly experience that supports better outcomes and greater peace of mind for families.
“The new CT scanner brings more advanced technology, enabling faster image acquisition while reducing radiation exposure,” says Chrissy Gamache, CT lead, IWK Health. “It also enhances the patient experience with features like integrated lighting within the scanner for a more comfortable and calming environment.”
The General XR room will be dedicated for ED patients, which will reduce wait times. Outpatients arriving for booked CT scans will also benefit from the more centralized location.
