Sleep for Health Research and Knowledge Mobilisation Centre

The Sleep for Health Research and Knowledge Mobilisation Centre brings together researchers from Nova Scotia, across Canada and further afield to fulfill our vision of “Healthy Sleep for All”.

The WHO Constitution defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity” and similarly, healthy sleep should not be considered just the absence of a sleep disorder. Sleep health is dependent on biopsychosocial factors and is a multidimensional concept encompassing sleeping at the desired time, for a sufficient duration to meet age appropriate needs, and waking up ready to meet the demands of the day. Through the Sleep for Health Research and Knowledge Mobilisation Centre we promote healthy sleep for all Nova Scotians, with a focus on the paediatric population, and support efforts to improve healthy sleep worldwide.

To achieve these aims we have five key objectives:

  • Knowledge Translation – to improve access, dissemination, and application of evidence-based information about sleep health to support best practice

  • Novel Multidisciplinary Research - to address knowledge gaps

  • Multidisciplinary Training and Mentoring - to grow and attract the workforce of the future

  • Create and Support Communities of Practice - to ensure children receive optimal care throughout the whole province of Nova Scotia

  • Advocacy - for healthy sleep to be given higher priority in public health, government, education, and health service agendas.
