Anatomical Pathology

The Anatomical Pathology laboratory at IWK examines tissue biopsies and organ specimens from IWK patients, as well as cases referred to us from around the Maritime provinces. Some examples of the types of specimens and diagnosis that we specialize in:

  • Gastrointestinal biopsies to diagnose Celiac disease and inflammatory bowel disease.
  • Placenta specimens from babies admitted to NICU.
  • Pediatric cancer specimens, including brain tumors.
  • Biopsies of skin, kidney, bone, soft tissue, etc.

The Anatomical Pathology laboratory also has expertise in post-mortem examinations (autopsies) from fetuses, infants, and children.
