Birth Unit

The Birth Unit helps by providing care and support to pregnant patients within the HRM who are in early and active labour, experiencing a high-risk pregnancy, or requiring surgery. We also provide high-risk obstetrical care to patients and their families throughout the Maritimes. Watch our Pre-Birth Information video.

What to expect

On arrival to the IWK, proceed to the Admitting Department on the first floor of the Women’s Building. The Admitting staff will inform the Birth Unit of your arrival. If you're scheduled for an induction or a Cesarean section, you'll be directly admitted to the Birth Unit on the 3rd floor Women’s Site. Otherwise, you and your support person(s) will go to the Early Labour Assessment Unit (ELAU) also on the 3rd Floor Women’s Site.

Once you're assessed in ELAU, you may be admitted to the Birth Unit, referred to Fetal Assessment and Treatment Centre for further evaluation, discharged home with instructions, admitted to the Prenatal Special Care Unit for observation, or to an Independent Stay room on the 7th Floor.

Once you’re admitted to the Birth Unit, our health care team of nurses and physicians will work with you and your family to determine your individual needs, and to provide support and care during your labour and delivery experience. Some of the people you’ll meet include nurses, physicians, clinical nurse specialist, anesthesiologists, unit aides, ward clerks, and medical learners.

For the well-being of you and your baby, and to respect the privacy of others, we ask that you limit your support persons to one or two.
