The IWK helps women in HRM by offering two different services related to breast health—the Breast Health Clinic and Diagnostic Breast Imaging.

How we help

Breast Health Clinic
The IWK Breast Health surgical program provides a comprehensive, patient and family centred, interdisciplinary program of clinical care and support of patients suspected of or diagnosed with breast cancer as well as other benign breast disease. Adults from the Halifax Regional Municipality and Halifax County communities who have been diagnosed with or are suspected to have breast cancer as well as other benign breast issues can be referred here. Our team includes Breast surgeons, breast reconstructive surgeon, Breast Health Nurse Coordinators, Clinic Nurse, booking clerks and unit aide.

Diagnostic Breast Imaging
Adults may be seen in the breast imaging department for a problem solving exam that may require a diagnostic mammogram, breast ultrasound, and imaging guided breast biopsy. To access this service, a requisition is required from a physician or nurse practitioner, or a recommendation from a screening mammogram. Breast MRI is performed based on the radiologist’s recommendation, at the request of a specialist, or as part of the high risk breast screening program. In addition to diagnostic imaging services we offer appointments for mammography screening through the Nova Scotia Breast Screening Program.

Our partners in care include perioperative programs at IWK and QEII, plastic surgery, nuclear medicine, diagnostic imaging, Nova Scotia Cancer Centre, social work, and genetics.
