The Nova Scotia Breast Screening Program is a Provincial Program that coordinates mammography bookings for 11 fixed sites and 1 mobile unit with 30 mobile stops provincially.
Who Should Get A Screening Mammogram?
Individuals aged 40-49 are recommended to have a screening mammogram every year.
Individuals aged 50-74 are recommended to have a mammogram every 2 years if they have no increased risk factors, such as:
- family history (mother, sister, daughter, father, brother, son)
- evidence of high risk, such as genetic predisposition or radiation therapy to chest wall
If you are at an increased risk, as outlined above, then you are eligible for yearly mammograms.
Individuals 75 and older can continue to have mammography every 2 years if they are in good health. If you are unsure if you should continue to have screening mammography, please talk to your health care provider to see if screening is right for you.
To be eligible for self-referral screening mammography, you must have:
- no new breast symptoms
- no breast implants
- no personal history of breast cancer
- minimum 1 year since previous mammogram
- resident of Canada with a valid provincial health card
If you are a breast cancer survivor, have breast implants or have a new breast symptom, you need to see a health care provider to be referred for a diagnostic mammogram.
What Do I Need to Book an Appointment?
To ensure you are booked for the appropriate appointment, you'll be asked questions concerning your age, address, date of birth, provincial health card number, previous breast health history including any previous mammograms.
What Does the Program Provide?
- Notification of screening results mailed to the client and their health care provider
- Recommendations and appointments for additional diagnostic imaging, if required
- Reminder postcards when it is time to book next appointment
- Access to a Patient Navigator to answer any questions
Mammography increases the chances of early detection of breast cancer.
Be Breast Aware: see your health care provider about any new breast symptoms even if you have recently had a normal mammogram.
