The Pediatric Consultation Clinic provides a comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up for children (up to age 16) with medical conditions.
How we help
Your child must be referred to the Pediatric Consultation Clinic by a physician or a nurse practitioner. We do not replace your family doctor, you should continue to see your family doctor for routine care and any new issues. The Pediatricians work closely with your family doctor and other specialists and health care providers to develop an individual plan of care that provides the best approach to managing your child’s condition.
Once a referral is received by the Pediatric Consultation Clinic, a Pediatrician will review/triage it and determine a timeline when your child will be seen. Generally your first appointment will be booked for 60 minutes, and follow-up appointments, if needed, will be 30 minutes. The Shared Clinics booking staff will notify the family with the appointment date and time by mail or phone. If you can’t make your appointment, please, let us know as soon as possible. If you do not show up that prevents someone else from having their child seen. Please call the clinic as soon as possible to reschedule (902-470-8043).
If it's been more than a year since we've seen your child, we need a new referral. Please see your family doctor to ask for a new referral.
If a pediatrician is seeing one of your children, we require a different referral for their brother or sister – please see your family doctor for all new referrals. If your child is followed in Pediatric Consultation Clinic and they develop a new unrelated issue, you should see your family doctor for their assessment. A new referral may be required.
What to expect
The Pediatric Consultation Clinic is located within the Shared Clinics area on the first floor of the IWK Health Centre.
To fully prepare for your appointment, please bring along with you:
- your child’s health card and appointment letter
- a list of the medications your child takes including the name and dose amounts
- a list of your child's immunizations. If you are unsure, contact Public Health if you need to updated records. (Public Health Website)
- snacks and activities to keep your child/children occupied while they wait.
- any diapers or pull ups you might need
You’ll need to arrive in Shared Clinics 15 minutes before your appointment for registration purposes—please allow extra time for parking. Upon arrival to the Shared Clinics, please take a number and listen for your number to be called for registration. The nurse will call your name, place you in an examining room, and obtain a complete nursing assessment before you're seen by the physician. The pediatrician may arrange for you to have some diagnostic testing done. Every effort is made to coordinate these tests on the same day.
