The Pessary Clinic is a nurse-led clinic that is a part of the Maritime Centre for Pelvic Floor Health (MCPFH). The MCPFH is a multidisciplinary clinic designed to provide timely and appropriate options for management and early intervention of incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse.
A vaginal pessary is a removeable device that is placed in the vagina to support the walls of the vagina or the uterus itself. They are used in patients with urinary incontinence and/or pelvic organ prolapse.
In the Pessary Clinic patients who are a good candidate for a pessary and are interested in trying this non-surgical management strategy will meet with a Registered Nurse (RN). The type of pessary that would work best will be selected based on your symptoms. The size of the pessary you need would be determined in a fitting process that involves a vaginal exam. You may also be taught how to manage your pessary, including insertion, removal and cleaning. You may also have follow-up visits with the Pessary Clinic for a recheck or for ongoing management.
