The IWK Consultation Liaison service provides psychiatric consultations for children and youth being treated as inpatients on the medical and surgical units at IWK Health. Psychiatrists work with pediatric and surgery teams to help address mental health and addictions concerns impacting the health and recovery of hospitalized children and teens. Consultations may include diagnostic assessment and clarification and treatment suggestions. Referrals or transition of care to other services within the mental health and addictions program may occur depending on needs of youth and the family. Efforts are made to effectively and collaboratively navigate the interface between pediatric medicine, surgery, and child and adolescent psychiatry in order to foster a successful treatment approach for the youth and family.
