IWK Specialty Seating, Rehabilitation Services helps reduce barriers to mobility by equipping clients with the customized seating required to help them and their families reach their goals.
How we help
On site at the IWK, in our Cape Breton Clinic, and at the Evergreen Home for Special Care, we assess our clients’ needs and interests in their home, school, and community. Our Occupational Therapist, Seating Technician, and sometimes a supplier representative, will then evaluate, modify, or prescribe seating and mobility equipment that will help our clients live an inclusive life. The Funding Coordinator supports families through the financing of their equipment.
Specialty Seating can include power and manual wheelchairs, medical strollers, mealtime seating, leisure seating, bathing equipment and specialized carseats. Further interventions may include, but are not limited to, wheelchair skills training for manual and power wheelchairs, exploring safe transfers, and lifting techniques.
Families receive access to Specialty Seating through referrals from many sources, including physicians, nurses, allied health professionals, and early interventionists. Families may also self-refer to the service. Once the equipment is prescribed, funding will need to be secured through private health insurance, the provincial wheelchair program, or other identified sources. Families are able to receive equipment once payment has been secured.
Our team includes an Occupational Therapist, Seating Technician, and Funding Coordinator.
