A Newfoundlander by birth, Janet, returned to Halifax in 2020 to retire from an academic position at the University of Puerto Rico. Previous to her 15-year tenure in Puerto Rico she taught at universities in Halifax, Constanza, Romania and Barcelona, Spain. She holds a BA and MA from Dalhousie University and a Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics from the University of Ottawa.
Her volunteer work that started when she was 15 years of age at a hospital in St. John’s, NL has covered helping in a classroom of deaf children, in an orphanage in Romania as well as in make-shift hospitals in Haiti post the 2010 earthquake. She has partnered with prosthetic teams on other humanitarian missions, volunteered as an IWK tutor and with immigrants and seniors.
