New advanced technology acquired by IWK Health will offer a less invasive treatment option for patients suffering from fibroids – benign growths within the uterus composed of smooth muscle cells and fibrous connective tissue.
Acessa® Laparoscopic Radiofrequency Ablation is an innovative uterus-preserving alternative for patients who may otherwise undergo a hysterectomy.
“An ultrasound is performed laparoscopically to identify all fibroids in the uterus and radiofrequency energy is delivered to the fibroid to induce coagulative necrosis, or cell death, to the fibroid tissue,” says Dr. Elizabeth Randle, IWK generalist obstetrician and gynecologist. “This results in a change in size and texture of the fibroid to render it less symptomatic.”
Fibroid symptoms may include heavy prolonged menstruation, pelvic pressure and pain, urinary frequency or urgency, and constipation. Fibroids affect approximately 70% of women by age 50 in some capacity.
While not every patient requires treatment, this new technology is advancing care for those who do.
“Advantages to the Acessa procedure compared to other surgical options for managing fibroids include minimal abdominal incisions, minimal blood loss, and a short recovery time,” says Dr. Randle.
“This technology focuses on patient experience with its minimally invasive approach to treatment,” says Dr. Jim Bentley, Head of Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology. “Studies have demonstrated a rapid recovery for the patient, less pain, and decreased risk during the procedure.”
“We are happy to have the Acessa device available at IWK and offer this procedure to our patients,” says Christine Pritchett, IWK Women’s and Newborn Health interim director. “This is an exciting opportunity to provide new, advanced options.”
IWK is one of just ten health centres in Canada to offer this treatment. The technology was purchased through the generous support of the IWK Foundation and its community of donors.
“The IWK Foundation is so proud to support the IWK in our shared commitment to advancing women’s health care in the Maritimes and beyond,” says Jennifer Gillivan, IWK Foundation President & CEO. “Our women deserve access to state-of-the art technology, like the Acessa, close to home. Through the incredible support of our donors, this advanced procedure for the treatment of fibroids, a painful and debilitating condition for many women, is now a reality at the IWK.”
The first patients are expected to be treated using Acessa® Laparoscopic Radiofrequency Ablation in September.
