Like some kids Atharv finds getting a needle a bit scary.  But new supports in place at IWK blood collection are making his regular visits a little more comfortable.

Krista McKeage is a Child Life Specialist who works with Medical Lab Assistants and registration staff at IWK blood collection to support children, youth and families with blood work.  She collaborates with those families in need to create a unique plan focused on coping.

This support can come in a variety of ways from information sharing to practicing skills ahead of time to support at the appointment.

“We can prepare children and youth for blood work using pictures and both real and play medical equipment to help them understand what will happen at their appointment,” says McKeage. “We can also offer support during bloodwork using distraction tools and/or coping techniques like deep breathing to reduce pain and anxiety.”

“Sometimes a practice appointment is needed to assess how best to support the patient during their actual blood work,” says McKeage. “A visit to the lab can allow patients to become familiar with the people, the setting and the steps involved. We may practice the steps involved in doing blood work and make choices about coping tools and comfort positions to promote a sense of control.”

For Atharv the care and support mean that he now eagerly anticipates his appointments and time with McKeage.

“The support from Child Life has surely made our visits to the hospital less overwhelming,” says  Abhijit, Atharv’s father. “They help reduce anxiety by offering activities to keep the children engaged and are a consistent source of comfort throughout the stay. Their involvement turned a potentially scary experience into a more manageable one.”

“We know from research that positive healthcare experiences can pave the way for positive future healthcare encounters,” says McKeage. “Patients and families can learn and practice coping skills that they can use in other areas of their life. They experience success!”

“Child Life isn’t just about play,” says Abhijit. “It's an essential service that supports the whole family, addressing what each family needs to help them cope during difficult times. This can have a lasting positive impact on the child's experience at the hospital.”
