The Division of Anatomical Pathology provides consulting services for pediatric surgical pathology and placental/obstetrical pathology cases. Some examples of appropriate referrals to our service:
- Pediatric malignancies or potential malignancies, including brain tumours.
- Pediatric gastrointestinal and liver biopsies.
- Placentas from pregnancies with adverse outcomes.
- Products of conception.
For cases from outside Nova Scotia, the referring institution may have to pay consulting and technical fees.
For placentas and products of conception, we prefer whole wet specimens shipped cold without fixative.
For second-opinion cases, we prefer slides AND blocks.
