The Maritime Centre for Pelvic Floor Health (MCPFH) is a multidisciplinary clinic designed to provide timely and appropriate options for management and early intervention of incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse. It is estimated that as many as 40 per cent of women have some sort of pelvic floor disorder and, as the population ages, we are seeing an increase in the number of people with these life-altering conditions.
Wait times to see a urogynecologist are currently lengthy. Some management strategies for pelvic floor issues involve lifestyle changes, bladder retraining, pelvic floor muscle strengthening, physiotherapy, medications, and surgery. The MCPFH is offering a virtual education component led by health care providers along with a workbook that can introduce strategies patients can get started with on their own or with a pelvic physiotherapist prior to their appointment. This will include some of the common reasons for referral: incontinence, overactive bladder and pelvic organ prolapse.
Once a patient is referred, they will be triaged to the most appropriate member of the multidisciplinary team:
- Patients may find the above animation helpful to learn about pelvic floor issues like incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse and the treatment options available.
- Once you have been referred to the program, we encourage patients to read the booklet and watch the virtual education session, which can be found at the patient resources link.
- Closer to your initial appointment you may wish to complete a 24 hour bladder diary and the worksheet on Creating your Personal Plan to guide you in what treatments are right for you. You can find these under Helpful Links and bring them to your initial appointment.
