How old do I need to be to apply to volunteer at the IWK?
Applicants to our core program must be at least 18 years of age and finished high school. Applicants to our summer program (July & August) must be at least 16 years of age by June 30th of the year they apply.
I am a high school student. Can I volunteer during the school year?
Because most of our patient programming happens during the day, we have a greater need for daytime volunteers. Evening and weekend opportunities are extremely limited.
I wish to observe or shadow medical staff.
Volunteer Resources does not offer observership placements and shadowing opportunities.
I am an adult and I often travel during the year. Can I still apply?
Taking a vacation or requiring a leave of absence is acceptable during a volunteer's involvement. To ensure continuity of programming, volunteers with an extended absence of two months or more cannot be guaranteed the same placement and/or shift upon their return.
Can my child volunteer with me?
Parents may not register as a volunteer with the intention of bringing their child in to volunteer as well. Children under the minimum ages cannot volunteer in the health centre even if they have a parent monitoring them.
I have submitted an application. How long will it take to hear back and become a registered volunteer?
Volunteer placements are frequently full. When an opportunity becomes available that matches your interested and availability, we will contact you for an interview.
Will I be trained for my volunteer role?
Volunteer Resources will ensure that all new volunteers are provided with a general orientation to make certain policies and procedures understood. Placement staff will provide specific training to their volunteers and will provide guidance, support, and assistance for the duration of your placement.
Will I have to pay for parking as a volunteer?
Complimentary parking is available to registered volunteers during their shifts.
What is the dress code for volunteers?
Volunteers are ambassadors for the health centre and how they dress reflects on the IWK as a whole. We ask that volunteers dress comfortably but professionally and wear their ID badge at all times during their shift. Summer volunteers must wear their volunteer t-shirt and ID badge while in the health centre.
