Learners

IWK Health hosts over 1,000 learner placements per year totalling greater than 170,000 hours of learning annually. The IWK is affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Health Professions at Dalhousie University and is the home for the departments of obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics (including pediatric subspecialties), pediatric surgery, and child and youth mental health. Learners from all schools and all professions, including support teams, are welcome at the IWK.

All placement requests need to come directly from a school, not an individual student. If you’re a student and you’d like to do a placement at the IWK, please advise the placement coordinator at your school and ask them to make the request on your behalf.

Making a placement request

Schools that have access to HSPnet, the electronic learner placement tool available within the province of Nova Scotia, are required to send their requests using that tool. Schools that do not have access to HSPnet are required to email their request to BLANK, Learning Consultant, at BLANK. The email should include information about your school/program, your preferred placement area, the dates/times of your requested placement (along with total number of hours) as well as your personal learning objectives.

Learner Placement offers are conditional on students meeting IWK Health’s pre-placement requirements (Pledge of Confidentially, Pre-Placement Health Screen, and Criminal Record Check with a Vulnerable Sector Search). In addition, there must be a current Letter of Agreement between the IWK and the academic institution/agency for legal and liability reasons. This would be arranged directly with the academic agency.
