Preconception Nutrition

Your health impacts your fertility and also influences the well-being of your children, from pregnancy and birth to their lifelong health. Eating a balanced diet and staying active is important to help parent and baby be as healthy as possible. Here are some suggestions you can take to prepare for becoming pregnant:

  • Staying active by aiming for 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week.
  • Eating a diet that includes nutrients like folate/folic acid, iron, calcium, and omega 3 fats.
  • Limit alcohol, tobacco, and cannabis intake.
  • Start taking a prenatal vitamin/mineral supplement containing folic acid.
  • If you have diabetes or a chronic health issue, consult your health care provider to optimize management before you conceive.
