Food Safety in Pregnancy

Pregnant individuals are at increased risk for foodborne illnesses during pregnancy. Ensuring good food safety can help decrease the risks of foodborne illness. Pregnant individuals should avoid certain high-risk foods, including unpasturized dairy, undercooked meats, raw seafood, and specific high-mercury containing fish (i.e. swordfish, shark). Protecting oneself against harmful bacteria and toxins can be achieved through proper food handling, storage, and cooking practices.
