The second trimester bloodwork and gestational diabetes screen is completed between the 24-28th week of gestation. All pregnant individuals are encouraged to have this routine bloodwork, which includes screening for:
- Anemia
- Sexually transmitted and blood born infections
- Gestational diabetes
- Maternal blood antibodies
Your care provider will provide you with a requisition for this bloodwork, and will give you instructions on when to complete the tests. IF your blood type is Rh negative (ie. "A negative"), you will be encouraged to take an Rh Immunoglobulin (a.k.a WinRho, anti-D immunoglobulin, RhoGam) to decrease your risk for Rh-sensitization. You can read more about Rh and blood types HERE.
If you screen positive for gestational diabetes, you will be supported by the Pregnancy and Diabetes Clinic team of dietitians, nurses, and physicians.
